The team is new. That is the interesting part: the architecture, the practices and the standards are not yet set, and whoever takes this seat gets to set them. You will lead backend engineering in Java and Spring, own the technical decisions, and grow a team around the work.
What you'll do
- Lead backend engineering from design and development through delivery and maintenance
- Own technical decisions and shape the architecture of scalable, maintainable systems
- Build and ship robust applications in Java and Spring
- Work across the stack where it helps, with React exposure being a real advantage
- Break down complex problems with engineers and stakeholders and deliver practical solutions
- Define and put in place the engineering practices a new team needs
- Hold the line on code quality and long-term maintainability
- Support the operational side, with a solid understanding of DevOps and production environments
- Mentor and guide the engineers on the team
What we're looking for
- 8+ years of software engineering experience, weighted toward backend
- 2+ years leading a team
- Expert-level Java and Spring
- Strong understanding of backend architecture, system design and building for scale
- A working knowledge of operations, production environments and DevOps practice
- Full-stack experience preferred, with React a strong advantage
- The ability to own projects end to end
- Clear communication and a collaborative way of working
